Explosive nose offers the full range of Barolo perfume: black cherry, black raspberry, rose petal, marzipan, licorice, menthol, leather, minerals. A wine of monumental scale but utterly suave and clear as a bell thanks to bracing balancing acids and superb tannic backbone. Great depth and vinosity; really expands in the glass and on the palate. The fruit explodes on the endless, ripely tannic finish. The full Barolo experience in 3-D and technicolor. *Ratings: RP-90 $99.99 Carmenet Vineyards Moon Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon Dark like squid’s ink, it actually appears to be purple. An extremely tart little young wine. Good potential in the fruit. $54.99 Casisano-Colombaio Brunello di Montalcino The estate is situated south of Montalcino, with vineyards receiving a southeasterly exposure, and the prevailing viticultural ideology reflects a traditional orientation, directly evidenced by Casisano’s use of Slavonian oak and fairly long maceration periods (averaging 25 days); organic principles have been employed in viticultural efforts since 1996.
Colombaiolo is the reknowned cru of the Ciarpella family’s estate with a yield of only 4 tons per hectare. The Brunello Riserva is crafted in exceptional years.
Sangiovese (grosso) grapes. Notes of blueberry, chocolate, tobacco leaf and campfire smoke, followed by plenty of fruit and a mature, silky, lingering finish. Only 400 cases made. Still very tight and structured. *Ratings: WS-91 $62.99 Caymus 1998 Napa Valley Cabernet 750 ml *Ratings: WS-91 $209.99 Cesari Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 750 ml Produced in the towns of Negrar, Marano di Valpolicella, Sant’Ambrogio, Fumane, San Pietro in Cariano (the historic area of Valpolicella Classico production). The drying on racks of the Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara grapes until mid January and the ageing in large oak barrels and barriques, together with the long period of rest in bottles, allow us to enjoy this great wine. $56.99 Chateau Cos d’Estournel 1996 Bordeaux Possesses an opaque purple color, as well as pure aromatics consisting of cassis, grilled herbs, coffee, and toasty new oak. Massive in the mouth, and one of the most structured and concentrated young Cos d’Estournels ever! $209.99 Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste 2003 Pauillac 750 ml A concentrated wine of good color, Grand-Puy-Lacoste has enjoyed a solid reputation for big, durable full-bodied Pauillacs. $99.99 Chateau Kirwan 2008 Margaux 750 ml A nose of sweet cherry liqueur here, aromatic and pure. A fresh and creamy extract on the palate, firm, with chewy tannins and moderate acidity. It seems well delineated with freshness but perhaps not the vigour. At least it has good fruit. If this comes together in bottle it may be worthwhile. It does seem to have moved away from the heavily extracted style of the 2007, which is good. $79.99 Chateau Montelena 1998 Estate Cabernet 750 ml *Ratings: RP-93 $59.99 Chateau Montelena 2004 Estate Cabernet 750 ml The wine has a nice dark, garnet Cabernet color. In the glass, the nose is primarily rich aromas of black cherry currant and menthol. It is very much fruit-dominated, and for the first few years its jammy Cabernet-berry and menthol characteristics will predominate - after which the soil’s contribution and winemaking, with the hints of new wood will begin to emerge. On entry it delivers a broad mouthful of fruit with cherry and cassis, plus relatively pronounced Cabernet tannins typical, at this young stage, of a fast-ripening crop. Vintages like 2004 do tend to concentrate the juice so every flavor element comes across stronger. $119.99 Chateau Talbot 2003 Saint Julien 750 ml Dark, macerated, blackberry fruit, with a buttery edge from the residual fruit. Sweet, with immediate impact on entry. Grippy, structured, but packed with loads of blackberry fruit. Nice texture and substance here. $64.99 Clos du Val Stag’s Leap Cabernet 750 ml Clos Du Val’s flagship estate wine, the Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon is deep purple-black in color and greets the nose with vibrant aromas of ripe black fruit balanced by a hint of dried herbs and toasty oak. The wine has a rich, powerful entry, filling the mouth with intense black fruit and spice. With its velvety-smooth tannins, this Cabernet illustrates Stags Leap District terroir. The long, lingering finish is characteristic of Clos Du Val’s winemaking style. $73.99 Clos Pegase 1997 Hommage Perfect with filet mignon, roast duck, rich pasta dishes, grilled portobellos, and aged cheeses. $81.99 Clos Quebrada de Macul Domus Aurea 750 ml Made with a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc, the 2005 Domus Aurea has a dazzling ruby color and an earthy, balsamic nose with hints of orange zest and chocolate. Aged for 18 months in French oak and another 18 months in the bottle, the Domus is juicy, concentrated, and balanced, with fine, well-integrated tannins. Outstanding with grilled lamb, mushrooms and sweet red peppers. $59.99 Conde de Hervias Rioja 750 ml Opaque ruby. Explosively perfumed nose offers a sexy bouquet of red and dark berries, Asian spices, candied licorice, black cardamom and yellow rose. Mouthfilling red fruit flavors are wrapped in supple tannins, with vibrant minerality adding lift. Impressively fresh and focused for such flavor impact, finishing with superb mouthcoating persistence. Primal but delicious already. $61.99 Craggy Range Sophia Dark and dense, with flashes of purple. The nose is initially compact and savoury, with a good dose of iron filings and minerality and not much else. With time and some energetic swirling, a range of other notes emerge to add complexity. There’s a sense of purple flowers, dark berry fruit, perhaps a slight saltiness too. The nature of the wine’s oak gains some clarity too, and it’s quite present, though totally integrated. A hint of volatility rounds things out. The palate is very much in line with the nose in that it’s both dense and reserved. Flow over the tongue is very tightly controlled, and from entry to mid-palate a slither of iron, complex berry fruit and sappy oak slides confidently along. It’s medium to full bodied and certainly substantial, yet measured and never clumsy. The after palate is marginally more relaxed and slightly sweeter in profile. Flavour is most complex at this point, and the wine’s lift helps each strand of flavour to fully define itself as it lands on the rear of the tongue. Just as it reaches its peak, it starts to fall away to a very long, satisfying finish. Tannins are remarkably fine and approachable, though their abundance suggests the capacity to age well. $59.99 Cumbre Raffaelli Vineyard Pinot Noir 750 ml A symphony of aromas ascend from each glass of this blend of Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noirs, showing a solid core of raspberries, acidity and toasty oak. *Ratings: WE-91 $67.99 d’Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz Raspberry, blackberry, vanilla, oak, green olive. Bacon, black currant, touch of cranberry and leather, shitake mushroom. Big full body, huge leathery tannins. Long with dark fruit and black pepper. $69.99 Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape 750 ml $79.99 Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape (Blanc) 750 ml $69.99 Dominus Estate 1999 Red Wine 750 ml A wine of great intensity, depth and complexity. Beautifully crafted, ripe, rich and creamy, showing off pretty vanilla and mocha-scented oak before a deep core of currant, blackberry, black cherry and minerally flavors fold in. Firm tannins add structure on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. $117.99 Dows 2000 Port 750 ml An opaque blue/purple color (typical of this vintage’s top offerings) is followed by a strikingly provocative aromatic display (flowers, licorice, blackberries, and cassis). This firmly-structured, classic, tightly-knit, restrained port exhibits brilliant purity as well as impressive intensity. While not the most dramatic or flamboyant, it is a beautiful, classically structured port that will age gracefully. $79.99 Duckhorn Napa Cabernet Sauvignon 750 ml A classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, this elegantly balanced wine combines generous fruit-forward structure with age-worthy tannins and a long, satisfying finish. From its layered aromatics to its lush palate of flavors, this wine brings together an array of red and black fruit elements, including red currant, baked plum, blackberry and sweet black cherry. Adding further depth to this core of ripe fruit are notes of vanilla, molasses, allspice, fresh herbs and black olive. $65.99 Duckhorn 2003 Napa Valley Estate Grown Merlot $79.99 Duckhorn 2003 Three Palms Merlot $79.99 Far Niente 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon $119.99 Felton Road Block 3 Pinot Noir Deep brooding nose of earth, leather, cocoa and dark fruits. The palate explodes with concentrated Damson plum interlaced with layers of Indian spices and mocha. The tannins offer considerable generosity while remaining succulent, lush and refined. Certainly a wine that will cellar well for several years. SAVE! Ferrari-Carano 1995 Tresor 750 ml Delicious aromas of ripe blackberry andcurrant from the Cabernet Sauvignon pair with the provocative notes of boysenberry and cherry cobbler from the Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. With a full bodied andrichly-textured tannin profile, this blend exudes aconcentrated palate ofintense red and black berries, cinnamon, chocolate, espresso, and vanilla.Upfront silkiness androundness make for a delicious wine now andwill drink well for 7-10 years. $89.99 Flora Springs 1998 Trilogy 750 ml The philosophy of blending is basic to the concept of Trilogy. We approach this wine like an artist with a palette of colors. The result is a complex masterpiece of flavors and aromas that have great persistence on the palate and are tempered with a sense of elegance and finesse. A preliminary Trilogy blend was made after malo-lactic fermentation had concluded. The wine rested quietly in small (50% new) French oak barrels until just prior to bottling. 1998 was a vintage that required stringent winery practices so that we could extract as much as we could from the fruit. $64.99 Flora Springs 2002 25th Anniversary Cabernet 750 ml *Ratings: RP-96 $159.99 Gallo 1994 Estate Cabernet *Ratings: WS-92 SAVE! In the mouth it is satin smooth with flavors of black cherry, cassis, black tea, and luxurious soft tannins that cushion the flavors and envelop them as they head towards a finish that seems to go on for minutes. Exquisitely balanced and complex. Truly extraordinary. $149.99 Jean-Luc Joillot Pommard 750 ml $64.99 Joseph Phelps 1998 Insignia Cabernet SAVE! Hands off for seven years. Even then beware of drinking it alone. $74.99 La Sirena Cabernet Sauvignon 750 ml Cabernet of great depth and elegance with purity of fruit and amazing balance. $159.99 Marquis Philips ‘Grail of Lisa’ - Shiraz 750 ml It has lots of Blackberry, White Chocolate, and Coconut Oil. The latter two are using descriptors that I found coming from American Oak. The fruit is ripe but its structure is quite restrained which helps to balance out the 16.4% Alc. Overall, it is an outstanding wine. $63.99 Match Napa Cabernet 750 ml Interesting tobacco and earth notes on the nose. Deep fruit and dark stones/asphalt on the palate. tannins were present, but not obtrusive. $62.99 Mayacamas Vineyards 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon 750 ml $71.99 Mer Soleil 2002 Chardonnay 1.5 liter *Ratings: WE-92 $79.99 Miner Vineyards Wild Yeast Chardonnay 750 ml Full-bodied and lush, yet never heavy, our Wild Yeast Chardonnay shows off flavors of ripe pear and melon with butterscotch and hazelnutnotes balanced by oak spice and bright acidity. Intricate layers of raspberry and blackberry, hints of cedar, truffle and chocolate linger in the long finish. Fine ripe tannins add structure and balance to the lush fruit. This wine will develop additional complexity over three to five years. If enjoying this wine in its youth, we suggest decanting prior to serving. $54.99 Molly Dooker 2006 Enchanted Path 750 ml fashioned from relatively young vines. It reveals an amazing opaque purple/blue/black color (always a hallmark of Marquis wines), a full bodied, powerful, smoky nose, extravagant layers of fruit, spice, glycerin, and extract, full body, superb intensity, tremendous richness, and a seamless personality. Cabernet sauvignon still predominates; exhaustive tasting of test blends during assemblage determines how much—if any—merlot, petit verdot, or cabernet franc will be included in the finished wine. Almost every vintage (an unbroken chain from ‘62 on) has something substantive to recommend it. Every decade has its high points. Taste and opinions differ. But the just-concluded decade of the nineties has been outstanding. Generalization does a disservice to the individual wines. There’s structure, there’s complexity, there’s balance. And they develop for a long, long time. *Ratings: WS-92 $129.99 Ridge Vineyards 2000 Monte Bello 750 ml Deep ruby. Explosively perfumed nose offers a profound bouquet of ripe cherry, blackcurrant, yellow rose, Asian spices and vanilla bean; you could use this for incense.
